Netflix To Screen New Voltron & Guillermo del Toro Cartoon Series

voltron-2Netflix has expanded its deal with Dreamworks Animation and as part of the deal is set to launch a number of new Dreamworks animated series on its streaming service. These include a new version of Voltron and the Guillermo del Toro produced Trollhunters.

Although details on both series are scarce the moment, Netflix says in the announcement of the deal that Trollhunters “will unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown”.

Voltron: Defender Of The Universe was a US cartoon that debuted in 1984 and originally adapted from a Japanese anime television series called Beast King GoLion. The second season was adapted from the unrelated anime series Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. The American version featured a team of astronauts that pilot a giant super Robot known as Voltron. It was MASSIVE at the time. In 2011  Nicktoons aired a “sequel” series called Voltron Force that featured a group of three young cadets brought together by the original members of the Voltron Force to defend the galaxy.

The deal also expands Netflix’s right for second-window streaming (ie, they’ve been shown on other channels first) of various other Dreamworks Animation series around the world. The include The Adventures Of Puss In Boots, Dinotrux and Dragons: Race To The Edge.
