JJ Abrams Surprises Everyone With Trailer For Cloverfield Sequel That Isn’t A Cloverfield Sequel

The internet went into WTF? mode during the small hours as reports started to seep through that people who went to see Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi at US cinemas last night were presented with a trailer for what seemed to be a Cloverfield sequel called 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Having this trailer appear from nowhere mirrors the original mystifying trailer for Cloverfield that debuted unexpectedly with another Michael Bay film, Transformers, and got the internet talking an interpreting and theorising. The same thing immediately started happening with 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Surely this couldn’t actually be a Cloverfield sequel made in secret? Is it even called 10 Cloverfield Lane or is that just an in-jokey address of the place where the characters are holed up and a deliberate piece of misdirection?

Pretty soon JJ Abrams (didn’t) clarify matter with a statement sent to Collider:

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

No, we don’t know what a “blood relative to Cloverfield” means either. Set in the same universe, perhaps. Anyway, a Tweet from somebody who went to see a test screening of a JJ Abrams film called (at the time) Valencia sheds a little more light on the matter.

Whatever the case, JJ Abrams knows how to create a buzz, doesn’t he?
