Netflix Confirms Second Season For Jessica Jones

The only surprise in the announcement that Netflix has given the green light for a second series of Jessica Jones is the fact that it took Netflix so long. The confirmation of Daredevil’s renewal took just a couple of weeks after its debut on the screening service. With Jessica Jones we’ve had to wait a couple of months.

Some internet pundits have speculated that this has less to do with any uncertainty about a renewal for the critically lauded Jessica Jones on Netflix’s behalf and more to do with wanting to announce it at the Television Critics Association winter tour. Which is a good theory, except that the creative team on the show turned out to have very little to actually say about the second series at the TCA panel. In fact, they insisted that they were as in the dark as the rest of us until the announcement.

“We learned about the pickup when you guys learned about it,” said co-executive producer Jeph Loeb. “We’re still in the stage of ‘YAY!’”

Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg claimed she hadn’t even begun preliminary work on the new season and wasn’t even sure when the writing team would re-assemble. “I honestly don’t know, I have no idea. We’ll find out soon, I’m sure.”

Continuing the “dunno-shrug” theme of panel, they also claimed to have no idea what was being planned for Netflix’s Luke Cage series (despite the fact the first series of Jessica Jones introduced the character to the Marvel/Netflix universe, and he and Jessica are an uneasy item) or whether the events of Captain America: Civil War would affect the characters in the Marvel/Netflix shows.

One thing that Rosenberg insists, though, is that the series will continue to place the emphasis on Jones’s development: “I think I just want it to be about her character. She’s a very damaged character, and that damage goes beyond Kilgrave. There’s a lot to mine from in her backstory and into her present day situation.”

The series’ official Twitter account also swiftly posted a teaser image announcing the renewal. [via Deadline]
