MacGyver Pilot Given The Green Light

Seems like every TV series ever made is currently getting a reboot. Except Reboot, sadly. The latest ’80s “classic” to get a 21st century makeover is MacGyver, the show that made a star of Richard Dean Anderson in the title role, as a secret agent with amazing improvisational skills that enabled him to create solutions to problems in superfast time using any everyday objects that happened to be at hand.

According to Deadline, CBS has ordered a pilot for a new version of the show with  Saw and Furious 7 director James Wan at the helm. The new series, with a script from Paul Downs Colaizzo, features a younger MacGyver: twentysomething Angus MacGyver is recruited into the clandestine organisation from the original series where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters. The series will apparent also be a kind of origin story, showing how the young MacGyver learned his skills.

Interestingly, a spin-off series called Young MacGyver was mooted in 2003, but only the pilot was made. Will this version get any further?

The original series’ executive producer, Henry “The Fonz” Winkler, is back in the same capacity on the new series.
