Power Rangers Movie Casts Elizabeth Banks As Villain Rita Repulsa

Elizabeth Bank may have had some freaky outfits and hair as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games but they might pale into insignificance in her new role as Rita Repulsa in the upcoming movie version of The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers if she’s anything like the TV version.

Rita Repulsa is an evil witch who was imprisoned for thousands of years but now she’s free she has plans to conquer Earth.

On TV Rita was portrayed by various actresses. She is based on the villain Witch Bandora in the Japanese series Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger where she was played by Machiko Soga. When this was re-edited as Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers in the US, her voice was provided by Barbara Goodson. Carla Perez took over the role from Soga after the character’s reintroduction midway through the second season through the end of Power Rangers In Space. In Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie, she is portrayed by Julia Cortez. Barbara Goodson continued to provide Rita’s voice for the Perez and Cortez versions of the character. In her final appearance as Mystic Mother she is portrayed by Machiko Soga, voiced by Susan Brady.

The new movie stars Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) as the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The Martian, Terra Nova) as the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger musician Becky G as the Yellow Ranger. The script is by Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) and the director is Dean Israelite (Project Almanac). [via ComingSoon]
