Bryan Singer Confirmed As Director Of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Remake

X-Men movies director Bryan Singer is now officially going to get the chance to make a long-cherished project, a new version of Jules Verne’s 20,ooo Leagues Under The Sea. And according to Deadline, Fox could be eyeing it as the start of new franchise.

Deadline reports that Singer has closed his deal with 20th Century Fox to make the movie from a script by Rick Sordelet & Dan Studney, based on a story by them and Singer. Singer will produce with Jason Taylor, who heads the director’s Bad Hat Harry Productions. Disney made a celebrated version of the novel starring James Mason as Captain Nemo in 1954.

“I’m incredibly excited to be working with my friends at Fox, with whom I’ve had such a long and fruitful relationship,” says Singer. “Ever since I was a boy and first discovered the 1870 Jules Verne novel, I have dreamt of retelling this classic story. Without revealing too much, it contains not only the original characters of Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Professor Aronnax, but also some new and original characters and sci-fi plot twists culminating in a timeless adventure for all ages.”

Hmmm, that last bit can’t help but remind us of The Return Of Captain Nemo (1978) the post Star Wars TV movie with José Ferrer as Nemo that reinvented Verne’s novel with lasers and robots. But we’re sure Singer can do a lot better than that cheap’n’cheerful schlock.

Singer’s new version will begin filming in the Autumn. Who do you think would make a great Captain Nemo? (We’re kinda betting Robert Downey Jr will be at the top of many people’s wish lists mainly because of the Tony Stark beard…)
