Wolverine 3 Aiming For An R-Rating

Wolverine-onelasttimeLooks like Deadpool has set a trend. No, not for superheroes breaking the fourth wall (we imagine this would lead to mass Cumberbitch hysteria if Doctor Strange spoke directly to them through the cinema screen). Instead, it seems that after Deadpool’s record-breaking box-office results for an R-rated film, other superhero movies are considering going down the same gorey-sweary-adult route.

Speaking at a Q&A following a special IMAX  screening of Deadpool for Collider, producer Simon Kinberg discussed the possibility of other Fox Marvel properties being R-rated and said, “I think there are some stories that could be R-rated. I don’t know what they are. I mean I think the mainline X-Men movies have their own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It’s more dramatic, it is more PG-13 in a way. X-Force I could see being R-rated, and who knows?”

He went on to qualify that this doesn’t mean that X-Force – which is still very much in the development stages – will definitely be R-rated but it does indicate that Deadpool has is causing some pensive chin-stroking among Fox execs.

Much more likely, however, is that Wolverine 3 will be R-rated, with various sites reporting the story that at Fox pamphlet handed out at Toy Fair 2016 explicitly states that the company is targeting an R-rating for Hugh Jackman’s final appearance as Wolverine next year. Note “targetting”. But it’s hopeful, isn’t it, to think that Logan’s claws could cause some serious damage in this his final film?
