Roger Corman Producing Death Race 2050

Legendary B-movie director Roger Corman is producing a new sequel to his own 1975 cult hit Death Race 2000 with a direct-to-shiny-disc remake to be released later this year called Death Race 2050.

The original Death Race 2000

Described as a mash-up of Battle Royale and The Cannonball Run, the remake, which began shooting earlier this month, is bieng directed by GJ Echternkamp (This American Life). It stars Manu Bennett (Deathstroke in Arrow, Azog in The Hobbit trilogy) as Frankenstein and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Star Trek Generations) as The Chairman.

According to the official synopsis: “In the not-too-distant future, America is controlled by an all-powerful corporate government that keeps the masses placated with violent virtual-reality entertainment. The event of the year is the Death Race, where a motley assortment of drivers compete in a cross-country road race, scoring points for running down pedestrians and killing each other. The reigning champion and popular favourite is half-man, half-machine Frankenstein — but little does he know he’s taken on a rebel spy as his co-pilot.”

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH: Death Race 2050: Deathsport, which was actually an alternative title (mainly used in Germany as far as we can work out) for the video rerelease of Deathsport, Corman’s own 1978 sequel to the original Death Race 2000.
