Voltron: Legendary Defender Trailer

Voltron Legendary Defender

The cartoon phenomenon of the ’80s is back! Voltron, the legendary Mecha formed form five robic lions, has found a new home on Netflix with an original animated series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, which the makers are claiming has a “Game Of Thrones feel with some humour.” And a lot fewer naked boobies one would assume.

The original Voltron series was based on the Japanese anime properties Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV. It aired in the United States from 1984-1985 and left an indelible mark on the young minds that saw it. There was also a TV special, Voltron: Fleet of Doom (1986), a CG series called Voltron: The Third Dimension (in 1998)  and Voltron Force (2011) on Nickelodeon.

“We’re trying to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can, because ultimately we have huge amounts of nostalgia for (the original) show,” co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery tells USA Today.

“Not everything is solved by Voltron alone,” Montgomery adds. “Sometimes they need to beat something just as the lions. Sometimes they just do it as themselves fighting as men.”

Voltron: Legendary Defender debuts on Netflix on 10 June.
