According to The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder, the veteran YA supernatural drama – which is fast approaching its seventh season finale – will end after its eighth season next year.
“We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice,” he told fans Sunday at WalkerStalkerCon in Nashville this weekend.
The CW, however, has told The Hollywood Reporter that no decision has been made when it comes to the future of the show beyond season eight.
In this case, though, we’re inclined to believe Somerhalder. He may have been asked to keep quiet until things were made official but what’s the show going to do? Sack him? He practically is the show these days after Nina Dobrev left in season six. If he decides he doesn’t want to do any more that could well be a reason for cancelling the show. Plus Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie the witch, also announced last week that season eight would be her last, so it does feel like the show is coming to a natural end.
On the other hand, ratings-wise the show certainly isn’t in any problems in the States. Now paired with its spin-off, The Originals, on a Friday night, it’s doing decent numbers for the channel. Maybe the CW should start thinking about another spin-off?
