Here’s yet another little present from the MTV Movie Awards to the internet: a behind-the-scenes video from the set of director Luc (The Fifth Element) Besson’s lavish new space opera, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets. Based on the French comic strip (or bande dessinée if you like to sound poncy like we do) Valérian et Laureline, the films stars Cara Delevingne as Laureline and Dane DeHaan as Valérian two special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe.
It’s a bit odd in these apparently more enlightened times than the ’60s (when the comics were first published) that the female half of the comic duo has been bumped out of the film’s title. Anyone fancy starting a campaign for sexual equality and getting Laureline’s name reinstated? Or better still having the film renamed Laureline And The City Of A Thousand Planets?
Anyway, the behind-the-scenes footage here suggest the design side of the film is going to be very impressive. Even the costumes and hair have a Euro-chic feel. The main thing that sets alarm bells going is the guy in the Spaceballs helmet doing some comedy jig as he backs into a space bus… We’re having flashbacks to the broader moments in fellow French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien Resurrection.
