James Cameron has announced that he is now planning not three but four Avatar sequels at 20th Century Fox panel at CinemaCon today. He went on to say that each of the sequels is designed have its own individual story, but together they will “form a complete saga”.
The first of the Avatar sequels is now scheduled to premier in December 2018, with the second to follow in 2020, the third in 2022, and the final one in 2023. Production on Avatar 2 is set to begin in New Zealand imminently. Cameron also unveiled a new logo.
Cast members confirmed to return include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver. Avatar 2 and the subsequent sequels will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment company. The sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
The original 2009 Avatar remains the top-grossing movie of all-time with $2.782 billion at the worldwide box office.
