According to Deadline, Alden Ehrenreich, who recently starred in the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar!, has emerged as the frontrunner to play the young Han Solo in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s 2018 Star Wars standalone movie.
After a casting process that whittled down thousands of hopefuls to a shortlist that also included Taron Egerton and Jack Reynor, Deadline reckons that Disney is on the verge of offering the role to the 26 year-old LA-born actor. His credits also include Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, Chan-wook Park’s Stoker and Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt and Tetro.
The as yet untitled Han Solo project (some outlets are calling it Han Solo: A Star Wars story but this appears to be guesstimation) will be directed by The Lego Movie team of by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan. Also featuring Chewbacca, it will focus on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley. It is currently scheduled for a May 2018 release.
