Why Is It Always Chess In Sci-Fi & Fantasy?

Once again, a genre show has used chess as a metaphor – this time it was the latest episode of Outlander (you can see our review here). Sci-Fi and fantasy loves chess because of the whole dark versus light vibe. There are also pawn and checkmate metaphors galore to have fun with. It reminded me of a daft little project I did on Facebook page last year. Some of you may have seen this before but hey, it took a while to put together so I thought it was worth another airing.

I don’t see why it always has to be chess in sci-fi and fantasy when there are so many other games to choose from. So here are some famous chess scenes from sci-fi and fantasy that have had the chess replaced…

Doctor Who

Blade Runner

2001: A Space Odyssey

X-Men 2

Dawn Of The Dead (Remake)

The Seventh Seal

The Prisoner

X-Men: First Class

DF-4702  Before Charles Xavier (James McAvoy, left) and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men who became the closest of friends. Here they enjoy a game of chess – the first of many they would play over their long and evolving history.

Star Trek

Chess 1b
