Netflix Punisher Series Given The Green Light

There have been rumours for some months that Netflix would produce a Punisher series following the character’s hugely popular debut in Daredevil season two (actually, before he debuted in Daredevil the buzz about him was so good) but Marvel bosses have cautious to confirm those rumours when directly asked about them. They’re tight-lipped no longer, though. A Netflix series for The Punisher  is now official.

Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, in the new series with Hannibal executive producer Steve Lightfoot serving as showrunner.

“We want to thank the fans who are clamouring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil,” says executive producer/head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “Now combined with showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring Marvel’s The Punisher to Netflix.”

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” says Steve Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel’s Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.” And let’s face it, the guy has proven he can make a show with a multiple killer as its central figure.

“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in Marvel’s Daredevil, and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” says Cindy Holland, Netflix vice president of original content.

The big question now is whether Frank Castle is going to turn up on The Defenders as well. We wouldn’t rule out a cameo.
