Goldeneye 007 – Welcome Back To 1997

Awesome news from the world of gaming. Set to return in new and shiny fashion is Goldeneye on the Nintendo Wii. Originally released on the N64 in 1997 and developed by Rare (Perfect Dark), Nintendo have announced a remake of the original GoldenEye 007 game at their E3 press conference on June 15, 2010.

The remake will be similar to the original, though Pierce Brosnan is being replaced by Daniel Craig alongside many other interesting and cool looking updates. The game is being developed by Eurocom to be published by Activision for the Wii and developed by n-space for the Nintendo DS.

The Wii version builds on and re-writes the original, retains the originals classic game play. The story has been re-written and adjusted to fit Daniel Craig’s grittier take on Bond, as well as updating the supporting cast, characters such as Alec Trevelyan and Valentin Zukovsky now have new motivations which fit well into the more modern Craig/Bond era. IGN’s Goldeneye preview gives us a tantalising glimpse at some of these new game play options, including the ability to play online.

Blending fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) action with covert game play, GoldenEye 007 epitomizes the modern thinking man’s shooter by offering varied ways to complete each mission, destructible environments, the use of cover and multiple control scheme options, including the Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Classic Controller Pro and the Wii Zapper. GoldenEye 007 also redefines the multiplayer experience on Wii with split-screen action featuring classic Bond characters and special game modes, as well as online play for up eight friends

The online experience looks to make this game even better and introduces players to several new modes; Hero Mode, Golden Gun, Goldeneye and classic conflict and also includes (the now standard in most FPS and online gaming) the accumulation of XP. This will raise your level and with each milestone you’ll unlock more abilities, modes, and modifiers.

This looks like a perfect opportunity to bring a classic and milestone setting game into the 21st century, it should appeal to retro and modern gamers alike and will definitely feature on this gamers Christmas list. Yes. I still make a list. GoldenEye 007 hits the Wii this Tuesday, November 2 2010. If you just can’t wait for then check out the awesome trailer below!

Editor’s Note – I had a very brief chance to play the Goldeneye007 at the MCM Expo last week, and despite losing a multiplayer game, it was uncannily like playing the original.
