Fans Launch ‘Help Nathan Buy Firefly’ Campaign

It was good news for Firefly fans this week when it was announced that The Science Channel had acquired the rights to the show. The channel will be broadcasting the entire series with an additional segment at the end of each episode from physicist Dr Michio Kaku who will discuss the theoretical science behind the show.

To celebrate, Entertainment Weekly published an interview with Nathan Fillion (who played Malcolm Reynolds) about his experience with the show. One quote from Fillion which grabbed the attention of the Internet was, ‘If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet’.

Since then, a campaign has begun to raise enough money for Fillion to buy the rights to Firefly. Over seventy thousand people have joined a Facebook group called ‘Help Nathan Buy Firefly’ and a pledging website has been set up at The anonymous creators behind the website acknowledge that Fillion may have been joking, and have published a list of charities that the fund-raised money could go towards if the Firefly plans fall through.

Former cast and writers of the show have also expressed their interest in bringing back the series. Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye) and Sean Maher (Simon Tam) gave very positive answers to fans’ questions on Twitter. Meanwhile, Jose Molina, who wrote the episodes ‘Ariel’ and ‘Trash’, tweeted ‘For what it’s worth, I’ve told him I’d drop what I was doing and follow’. Jane Espenson, writer of ‘Shindig’, replied, ‘I’m there, if needed.
