Modern Warfare 3 reveal coming at Game Developers Conference 2011?

Earlier today Activision sent dogtags containing the names 0f the villians from the Modern Warfare series’ names to That Videogame Blog and other gaming media outlets. Attached to these is another dogtag that displays a web link to, this url in turn directs you to a countdown clock, which has just under 5 days (At time of writing) remaining on it.  As coincidence would have it that date lines up nicely with the upcoming Game Developers Conference 2011, leading many to expect an announcement at the event. In the past there have been many awesome GDC game announcements, so we can probably put that side of the argument to rest.  Also given the cliffhanger ending of Modern Warfare 2, it’s safe to assume Activision planned for a sequel.  However it is when we look closer at the development side that my interests are piqued further.

Modern Warefare 3 announcement clock?

Last year, the two key figures at Infinity Ward ( Developers of Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 ) Vince Zampella and Jason West, left Activision with a bang, with allegations of Activision taking royalties from the success of Modern Warfare 2. Upon their departure West and Zampella founded another studio, Respawn Entertainment.  After their firing, nearly half of the Infinity Ward staff left the studio and declined to comment why.  The newly fired employees then joined West and Zampella and togther they formulated a lawsuit against Activision for unpaid bonuses around the 75 million and 500 million dollar mark. In addition to this the employee group claimed that Activision held these bonuses back to force them to develop Modern Warfare 3.  The trial date for Jason West, Vince Zampella and the Infinity Ward Employee Group vs. Activision is currently set for May 23, 2011.

This begs the question about the quality of Modern Warfare 3, with 2 founders of the company and half of it’s workforce gone and replaced with new, fresh faces will Modern Warfare 3 be able to live up to the amazing standards of it’s predecessors? A question that will be answered it seems when the countdown clock reaches zero.
