Latest Instalment of the Narnia Series Announced

Proof came earlier this week that Christmas can come to the land of perpetual winter for Narnia fans as Walden Media announced that a new sequel is in development for the beloved children’s series.  Despite some misgivings about the previous instalment – The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader – a fourth addition to the popular series is expected to be released in a couple of years.  What might surprise fans of the books however is the decision to skip the fifth chronological book in the series, The Silver Chair, in favour of the sixth book instead.

The Magician’s Nephew is set before the events of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and depicts the adventures of Digory Kirke (who is actually the old professor that Pevensie go to stay with at the beginning of the first movie) and his friend Polly in their discovery of the magic wardrobe.  The movie also explores the origins of the White Witch, with actress Tilda Swinton seemingly keen to reprise her role as the fur loving Jadis and fans will also no doubt be on tenterhooks as the origins of the infamous Narnia lamppost are revealed, proof that even high budget sequels have space for obscure back stories.

Despite something of a rollercoaster ride in terms of reception, Voyage of the Dawn Treader has gone on to gross over $400 million dollars internationally, more than doubling its $150 million production budget; the upcoming UK DVD/Blu-Ray release is set to add to these profits.  The third instalment of the Narnia franchise may not have done as well as its predecessors, but the couple of years between now and the rumoured release of The Magician’s Nephew will give the fauns at Walden Media a chance to polish their hooves and iron out the kinks that have seen interest in the series flounder.
