Monsters Inc. Prequel Announced

Following from Toy Story and Cars, another Pixar film from their back catalogue is set to receive a sequel, or in this case, a prequel.

Disney vice president of distribution, Dave Hollis, revealed at Las Vegas’ CinemaCon event that there is another Monsters Inc. film in the works, titled Monsters University. Hollis revealed the following:

The film is a prequel that tells you a little bit about how [Sully and Mike] first met, attending Monsters University…Obviously everybody knows at this point Mike and Sully are amazing friends–the best of friends–but as it turns out, in this story, that wasn’t always the case. From the moment they met at the university, they could not stand each other. This story takes you through the ups and downs, and how they overcame their own differences.”
Billy Crystal and John Goodman are set to reprise their roles as Mike and Sully, though it’s expected that Pixar will introduce new characters. Being a prequel means it should still make sense to those that have never seen the original film.

Before the announcement, veteran Disney artist Floyd Norman let slip on Twitter, “Nice to see a new director helming Pixar’s “Monsters2.” Very refreshing.” This would suggest that Monsters Inc’s original director, Pete Docter, is out of the picture, though there’s been no official comment on who is directing.

Monsters University is currently scheduled for release in November 2012, making it 11 years since the original film opened.
