The Hobbit Shoot Begins! Amazing Peter Jackson Vlog

Today, Peter Jackson, the genius behind The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, King Kong and The Lovely Bones posted the first of many vlogs on his Facebook page which will chronicle the making of The Hobbit which he is currently helming in New Zealand.

The Hobbit, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic, is written by the familiar team of Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens and will be released in two parts the first of which has a scheduled release date of December 19th 2012. The second part will follow in 2013. Similar to Lord Of The Rings, the films are shooting simultaneously and will feature many of the sets and a few characters used in LOTR. In the vlog, we are shown Rivendell, Bilbo‘s home in Hobbiton as well as new locations in the story such as the Goblin Caves which form arguably the most important part of the whole mythology.

As well as locations, Jackson shows us the cast (including Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Ian McKellan as Gandalf) and crew blocking scenes, weapon and horse training, makeup, props and art department. Also included is an intimate account of a traditional Maori welcome ceremony in the sound stage to bless it with goodwill. This is perhaps needed after the huge delays the film has encountered due to rights issues, schedule conflicts and the departure of original director Guillermo Del Toro who had a large creative input in the film.

These videos will be a fascinating insight into the creation of Middle Earth and it’s inhabitants.
