It’s elementary, Sherlock production has begun.

Yesterday news emerged that the pre-production stage of the second series of the hit BBC series Sherlock had begun. The news originated from Mark Gatiss, the show’s co-creator, after he tweeted ‘Production meeting done now #Sherlock read-through tomorrow! Looking forward to the 221b reunion.’

The series which aired late last year was an unexpected hit achieving high viewing figures and developing a loyal following of fans. The series was also the first adaptation to be set in the 21st century, leaving behind the foggy, grimy Victorian image the detective has become most associated with. Instead viewers were treated to a modern, buzzing London with a Nicotine-patch wearing, Blackberry using, sex symbol sleuth played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

The last time we saw Holmes and Watson, played by Martin Freeman, they were confronted by the detective’s most unnerving opponent yet, Moriarty, and Holmes was faced with a decision that could have disastrous results.

So what will the new series have in store? Nobody quite knows yet but one thing’s for sure, there’s certainly going to be more episodes, no doubt with more murderers and members of the criminal classes than an Agatha Christie night on ITV3. And what of the characters? Will Irene Adler be making an appearance? One can only hope. Afterall as Sherlock Holmes himself  once said, ‘when one has eliminated the impossible what ever remains, however improbable, is the truth’ and therefore one can deduce we are in for one hell of a treat.
