Interview with Esprit D’Air

If you haven’t heard of them already, Esprit D’Air are a four-piece J-rock band hailing from London who are ‘right in the heart of the current UK J-rock revival scene.’ They are: Yosh (lead vocals), Kai (lead guitar), Erisu (bass guitar) and Daishi (drums). Their 3-track EP Deai (出逢い) was released on the 29th October 2010, and with talk of a second release in the works, I caught up with the band to find out more…

Q: Hey guys! What have you been up to in the time between Deai and your current project?

A: We’ve been very busy! We’ve played some awesome shows – shout out to Barcelona! Found ourselves a permanent drummer, and saw the unfortunate departure of our rhythm guitarist – we miss you Yuki
Recently we’ve been pouring our energy into writing new material and recording! Yosh has been organising and performing at charity events in aid of Japan’s tsunami.

Q: Well done Yosh! Can you tell us about your new drummer?

A: He’s great! We had been without a drummer for quite some time so when Daishi stepped in and said he’d play drums for us – we were thrilled! One of his first gigs with us was at the last MCM Expo. We started rehearsing for that show a few weeks before and he got the arrangements of our songs down pretty tight. That was when we knew that he was the right person for the band. In addition to that, we are also great friends – so welcome aboard Daishi!

Q: I remember Daishi from October’s Expo and am glad to hear he’s permanently on board! Do you think you’ll be making another Expo appearance any time soon?

A: We’d love to play there if we were invited again. We miss all the fans we met at MCM!

Q: So, what can you tell fans about your upcoming release?

A: We’re all very pleased with the way the songs are shaping up. We’ve been spending a lot of time developing our compositions, exploring new avenues, and pushing the sound of our last EP further than before. We’re excited, and we hope our fans are too!

Q: You say you’re pushing your sound further than before – for those who are new to your music, how would you describe your sound?

A: With each member having their own musical background and influences from both Western and Japanese music, we’ve sculpted a cohesive sound which excites all of us! To be descriptive… basically, there’s ‘more’ than before in terms of heaviness, beauty, maturity etc. – all the elements which make up our music, and in some cases less is more. We will always keep pushing to achieve our goals: to write music that we genuinely love, and constantly better ourselves – so stay tuned!

Q: Finally, do you have a message for MCM Buzz?

A: We are currently holding a free competition on our official website where one lucky winner will receive an exclusive gift pack from the band, so be sure to check it out! Other than that, enjoy the expo! It’s a great place with a warm atmosphere. Have a great time and hopefully we’ll be rocking in a place near you! Thanks for reading our interview!

A big ‘thank you’ to Esprit D’Air for their time and answers!

  2. […] but sweet taster of what’s to come. The group alluded to a heavier sound in our exclusive May interview, and it certainly seems that they’re living up to their word! […]
