What is Pottermore?

So you’re getting teary in the knowledge that Harry Potter is coming to an end with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 next month. Well it just so happens that this isn’t the end. A mysterious new website called has just been launched by J.K. Rowling.

For the moment, it’s all speculation, since nobody knows what Pottermore is. Rowling’s spokeswoman, Rebecca Salt revealed that it is, “not a new book” and it is “not directly related” to the final Potter movie. “We aren’t saying anymore than that!

Underneath the title it says, “Coming soon…” followed by Rowling’s signature. It’s worth nothing that at the bottom of the page we can see that Warner Bros are involved. It appears that the idea was formed a couple of years back, with Warner Bros having trademarked the name back in 2009. Their description of Pottermore is a site, “providing multiple-user access to a global computer information network; providing on-line chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages,” as well as, “providing on-line facilities for real-time interaction with other computer users concerning topics of general interest.” It’s all carefully worded so as not to ruin the surprise.

Clicking on one of the two owls on Pottermore takes you to a Youtube countdown page, with Rowling expected to make an announcement on June 23rd. So any guesses as to what Pottermore could be? An online role-playing game? A cartoon series maybe?
