Can Spielberg name keep Falling Skies flying high?

AFTER months of promotion – including a spot during this year’s Superbowl – TNT’s sci-fi series Falling Skies hit US TV screens.

It seems, for the moment, that all that hard work has paid off with the show opener drawing some 5.9 million viewers – the highest for a premiere in 2011.

So what can be said about the debut? Well, it’s definitely a slow-burner. Things aren’t explained in great detail. Maybe they will be as the series progresses.

Add to that the aliens and their fixation with young humans and it certainly has left viewers looking for more.

Characterization is a major plus for Falling Skies. Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood and Will Patton take the lead roles as the main players in the resistance against the aliens. Given some of the dialogue between them, it’s safe to say they all have their own issues which will hopefully be touched upon as things heat up.

It’s also certain that Steven Spielberg‘s name being emblazoned across all the posters and trailers will have helped add a few people to that 5.9m total.

However, being executive produced by the man who knows how to deal with aliens (if you’ve seen ET, Close Encounters and War of the Worlds), will that be enough to keep figures at the high end?

Only time will tell. But Falling Skies has already posed some intriguing questions. It’ll be interesting to see where it goes.

Falling Skies begins on FX UK on July 5 at 9pm.
