Out next week: The Tree of Life

Out July 8th is the latest film from director Terrence MallickBadlandsThe Thin Red Line) “The Tree of Life“. The film was released in the U.S. some time ago and has received high critical praise with a rotten tomatoes score of 85%, a metascore of 85/100 and an IMDB rating of 8/10.

Starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain, the film follows the story of Jack (Penn) from his life as a child in 1950’s Midwestern America through to his adult life. All the while trying to reconcile the complex relationship he shares with his father (Pitt).

The film is described as Jack’s journey as “a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith”. This isn’t just a human drama though. The Tree of Life takes place over billions of years depicting the most important moment’s in Earth’s history using computer generated imagery.

These include the formation of the universe in a stunning blast of  cosmic power 14 billion years ago; the formation of the Earth from the accretion of solar nebulae 4.5 billion years ago; the appearance of the first single-celled life forms in the Proterozoic Eon; the 160 million years during which dinosaurs reigned as the most dominant and complex beings on the planet; and the universe’s ultimate fate projected billions of years from now when our sun has become a white dwarf and the scattered remnants of Earth trail behind”

Seeing how Mallick will fuse a human drama with a space epic should definitely be interesting at the least. The Tree of Life is Mallick’s fifth film and perhaps his most ambitious. Expect to see more about the film and the behind the scenes as we draw closer to it’s July 8th release.
