Rise of the Planet of the Apes “Chimp Intelligence Test” video

Twentieth Century Fox are no strangers to viral marketing and are continuing the trend with the much anticipated Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Recently released is a snippet from a  documentary describing why chimpanzees are more than just physically superior to their human counterparts.

The video depicts chimpanzees taking short term memory tests in which they must remember a sequence of numbers. We’re told that, while humans rarely reach a score of six, chimpanzees consistently score perfect tens. The scary part is that while this is a documentary released for the purposes of publicity, the test itself seems legit, using footage from an ABC News story. Chimpanzees actually do have better short term memories than us. The even scarier thing is that we’re told this skill would be “invaluable in combat situations”.

Andy Serkis did say that playing the lead ape in the film, Caesar, is more like playing a “gifted child who’s an innocent, who then witnesses brutality”. This video is part of a series that has been released in what is probably an attempt to make the frankly far-fetched plot seem more plausible. Don’t worry kids, chimps may be 97.8% genetically identical to us but it’ll be a long time before they can create their own civilizations.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens August 12th in the UK.
