Mistborn & Wheel of Time Game Adaptations

One of fantasy fiction’s biggest writers, Brandon Sanderson, has been telling fans though Twitter that he has been in talks with game developers concerning an adaptation of his popular Mistborn novels as well as a hint of a Wheel of Time game too.

For a few weeks now he has been Tweeting about a few discussions concerning his Mistborn novels being turned into games, but yesterday he Tweeted directly about the progress:

“In other news I’ve been reviewing a Mistborn video game proposal, and am impressed. We’re going to accept, assuming contracts work… I can’t announce what type of game, what company, or even what platforms yet. Maybe soon, (WoT fans, your games are in development already).”

The information is scarce to say the least, but it does look promising. Brandon Sanderson hit the spotlight recently since he took over the job of completing the epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, as Jordan sadly passed away before completing the series. Sanderson mentions The Wheel of Time in his Tweet, which suggests another fantasy hit that’ll receive a game adaptation; although due to the sheer size of each book and the series as a whole, it will be interesting to see how this will be done or whether it could replace the online gaming giants, World of Warcraft.

The Mistborn trilogy, Sanderson’s own work, has been shortlisted for an abundance of awards, so it isn’t surprising that some sort of adaptation is in the works; especially with the success of George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones television adaptation doing so well for HBO.

The Mistborn books (The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension & The Hero of Ages) follows the story of street urchin Vin Venture, who can perform special abilities when she consumes small amounts of different metals from copper to tin. Much of the books involve sneaking around and flying through the air, so it could have similarities to Assassin’s Creed amongst other things. For those who have read the books, this is quite an exciting development, as Sanderson’s magic system within the books is unique and clever.
