Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Earns $1 Billion Worldwide

Over the weekend, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides managed to cross the billion-dollar mark in worldwide ticket sales. It has become only the eighth film to so.

Already the highest grossing film of the year so far, it has currently earned $1,007.7 billion. This ranks the film as the 7th highest grossing film worldwide, behind another Disney and Johnny Deep collaboration, Alice in Wonderland, though On Stranger Tides could end up overtaking it in the coming weeks.

The fourth instalment had under performed in the US, especially when compared to the previous Pirates of the Caribbean films. However, its international box office takings, as well as the additional cost of 3D tickets, has helped propel the film into becoming one of the biggest hits of all time.

This is how the top ten all time worldwide box office currently stands:

1. Avatar (2009) – $2,782,275,172

2. Titanic (1997) – $1,843,201,268

3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) – $1,119,110,941

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) – $1,066,179,725

5. Toy Story 3 (2010) – $1,063,171,911

6. Alice in Wonderland (2010) – $1,024,299,904

7. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) – $1,007,703,000

8. The Dark Knight (2008) – $1,001,921,825

9. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) – $974,733,550

10. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) – $963,420,425

Looking ahead at the rest of the year, a billion dollar gross and a position in that top ten list is also being predicted for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, after having already earned $370 million worldwide since its release. There are also big projections for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1.
