Mixed opinions on The Tree of Life upon wider release

With The Tree of Life just a few days away from release opinion from reviewers outside the U.S. is mixed. Prestigious site Film4 gave the film a less than spectacular 2 and a half stars. Critic Catherine Bray ended the review saying:

“Malick’s film has its moments and certainly creates an impression visually, but you could say the same thing about Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. Despite its problems, and our resevations, we’d recommend those who are serious about cinema should see, and discuss, this film.”

Film4 aren’t the only ones defying the metacritic averages though. Australian site TheFilmPie reports: “Based on other reviews I’ve read, it looks like The Tree Of Life will feature in many top 10 lists at year end.  Not mine though. Perhaps I just didn’t get it.” Despite this the reviewer, Matthew Toomey, did give the film the above average score of a B-. Another Australian site FilmINK has stronger words for Terrence Mallick’s latest piece, “While beautifully shot, with no real narrative to anchor Terrence Malick’s experimental style, this ends up an incomprehensible and self-indulgent disappointment.” There seems to be a general consensus that The Tree of Life is beautiful to look at but the quality of the content itself is a lot more debatable.

The Tree of Life is a story spanning millions of years, starting at the dawn of time. While also following the story of Jack (Sean Penn) from his life as a child in 1950′s Midwestern America to his adult life in the modern world. All the while trying to reconcile the complex relationship he shares with his father (Brad Pitt). It is worth noting that the film’s cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, has reportedly confirmed that Terrence Malick is currently working on a 6 hour director’s cut of the film for release some time in the future.

The Tree of Life will be released in UK cinemas this Friday, July 8th.
