Uncharted Movie Gets a New Director

Director Neil Burger has been hired to write and direct an adaptation of Sony’s popular videogame Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, for Columbia Pictures.

Burger landed the role after impressing producers Avi Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner with his take on the film. A script has already been drafted by Conan the Barbarian writers Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, however Burger is expected to carry out a rewrite.

The game was released in 2007 and tells the story of treasure hunter Nathan Drake as he attempts to find El Dorado, the Lost City of Gold. The adventure becomes a little more complicated after competitive rival hunter, Gabriel Roman, tries to beat Drake to the treasure. David O. Russell was originally slated to direct with Mark Whalberg in the lead role, but left the project in May, citing “creative differences.” It’s unclear if Whalberg is still interested in starring.

Burger’s last film, Limitless, which starred Bradley Cooper, proved to be a surprise smash at the box office. Released earlier this year it pulled in over $150 million worldwide.

As for the latest game in Naughty Dog’s franchise, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be released in the UK on Wednesday 2nd November, opening two days early than expected.
