IDW to relaunch POPEYE comic series!

IDW publishing (Star Trek, Gene Pool) announced at San-Diego Comic-Con this week that spinach eating, Bluto beating, servant of the sea Popeye has set sail for his return to comic books in 2012.

Having made his bulging bicep debut to comic-strips back in 1929, Elzie Crisler Segar‘s Popeye has since stared in his very own animated series, film adaptations and ever-long promoted the benefits of eating your greens for more than 80 years.

1994 saw the last of Popeye‘s one eyed capers in print, but according to IDW publishing he’s back and bigger than ever. The new monthly series will see the re-imagining of Popeye whilst keeping that special something Segar created in 1929, including all the chaotic classic characters, Olive Oyl, Bluto, Wimpy and Swee’Pea.

IDW chief executive Ted Adams said:

“I grew up reading Segar’s Popeye and we’ll be bringing his sensibility to our new series, and plan to launch in early 2012.”

Will you be toasting a tin of spinach to welcome ye old sailor back aboard? Leave you’re thoughts in the comment section below!
