Haywire Poster and Trailer Unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con

Director Steven Soderbergh and stars Gina Careno and Channing Tatum were at the San Diego Comic-Con, where they chatted and unveiled the poster and trailer to action thriller Haywire.

Originally titled Knockout, Soderbergh got the idea for the film after watching Mixed Martial Arts fighter Gina Careno fighting on television, and felt that she ought to be in a movie. Careno, who Soderbergh says, “can actually break people in half,” trained in Muay Thai and gained popularity after appearing as Crush on US TV’s American Gladiators. After seeing her on TV, Soderbergh called up his screenwriter for The Limey, Lem Dobbs, to see if he was interested in writing a female revenge flick.

In the film, Careno plays freelance covert operative Mallory Kane. After being hired to go on a mission to free a Chinese journalist, she then finds she has been double-crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Using her skills and abilities to escape an international manhunt, she then plans her revenge on the one that betrayed her.

Of the film, Soderbergh said, “We tried to be really accurate about this world. We had a couple of consultants who worked with us to make sure that everything we were doing was factually accurate.” He also revealed that Carano did all her own fighting stunts for the film. She can be seen in the trailer running along walls, jumping from building rooftops and fighting with her co-stars Channing Tatum and Michael Fassbender.

The film’s cast also includes Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas.

Haywire has no UK release date yet, but is set to open in the US on January 20th 2012.
