Step aside Optimus Prime and tell your Transformers to pack their bags, there’s a new shape shifting, soul saving alliance in town. Voltron is back to defend the galaxy with its very own long awaited live action movie (do I smell a potential franchise?).

For those who are unfamiliar with the name Voltron, well, imagine if the Transformers had a love child with The Mighty Morphin Power RangersVoltron would be the resulting love child (Spandex included sadly). First aired in 1984 the Japanese anime created by American animation whiz-kid Peter Keefe (Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs) followed the high octane, suspenseful, galaxy defending conundrums of the Voltron Force. A guild of peace keeping, morally sound teens, dedicated to whooping evils behind… with the small help of their giant transforming multi coloured Lion based weaponry & vehicles (of course).

Defending The Galaxy

After a heart-achingly painful on and off battle to get the live action movie green-lit for production, the project seemed to be an inevitable failure and has been languishing in development hell for several decades. That was until this past weekend when Relativity Media (Cowboys & Aliens, 300) confirmed as part of the first ever Voltron panel at San-Diego Comic-Con, that they have officially revived the project. They have also confirmed that the project will be produced by Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) and Richard Suckle (The International) with a script being written by Thomas Dean Donnelly (Conan the Barbarian) and Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara).

Relativity’s president of worldwide production, Tucker Tooley, says of the upcoming film, “For nearly three decades, Voltron has captured the minds of a nostalgically loyal and rabid fan base and has long been considered a hotly-pursued project. We are beyond excited that World Event Productions and Atlas Entertainment have placed their trust and faith in Relativity to bring this coveted property to the big screen, and usher in a new generation of devoted fans.”

Whilst this is exciting news for Voltron fans it is best to remember that although the film has been green lit this still doesn’t mean it will go ahead (As previous attempts have gotten as far as script stage too) and so for now fans can only wait and hope that the franchise is finally able to break free from development hell once and for all.

Are you as excited as we are? Or will this be another G.I Joe? Let us know in the comment section below!
