‘The Walking Dead’ Given Life For Third Season!

In the least surprising announcement since the year 1666 when Sir Christopher Wren decided that plans to rebuild London with brick and stone rather than timber were “quite good,” AMC have given the green light to a third season of The Walking Dead, after only the second episode of Season Two premiered Stateside.

Since the initial ten-part series was aired last year, the show has amassed a huge fanbase with a lot of those viewers being fans of the comic book series, written by Robert Kirkman, and some being swiftly converted. When the season two première broke viewing records, previously held by Stephen King based sci- fi The Dead Zone, as 7.3 million people tuned in, a third season suddenly seemed like a no-brainer.

Charles Collier, AMC‘s president said, “Today we are pleased to announce that the ‘dead’ shall live as we proudly renew ‘The Walking Dead’ for a third season on AMC and, globally, with our terrific partners at Fox International Channels. We are thankful for everyone’s contribution in front of and behind the camera as we continue to make ‘The Walking Dead’ a unique television experience. And, we are so proud as it continues to set viewership records around the world.”

The Walking Dead is a ground breaking show and even though it veers heavily from the comics, its unique blend of slow burning character development, ultra- gory Zombie based action and cynical humour has managed to slake even the most die-hard fanboy’s bloodlust. Season Two already promises to build on the initial success and has been given an extra three episodes this time around in which the stories are allowed more time to breathe. If there was one criticism of Season One it was the slightly rushed feel the story had, as if the makers wanted to limit the episode tally in case the show was a flop. It certainly wasn’t and the muscular storytelling shown in the Season Two première proves the makers are in their stride and not afraid to play with our expectations whilst delivering hefty emotional wallops to the gut. Essential viewing.

The Walking Dead follows a group of survivors of a zombie apocalypse led by Sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) as they attempt to survive the undead and keep their sanity. It is perhaps the living who are more dangerous than the dead.

You can watch The Walking Dead every Friday at 10pm on FX in the UK.

Season One is out now on Blu- ray and DVD.
