DVD review: Tim Minchin and The Heritage Orchestra Live at The Royal Albert Hall

STAND UP comedy can sometimes be very hit-and-miss. And when a comedian uses music as part of the routine, it may put some people off.

However, Australian Tim Minchin has quickly established himself as one of the funniest on the comedy circuit, intelligently melding various musical styles to his own edgy brand of humour.

This month marks the release of his epic two and a half hour extravaganza from The Royal Albert Hall.

Announcing his arrival on stage, the big-haired comedian immediately grabs the attention of the huge audience with a quite spectacular theatrical entrance. An entire orchestra plays as he belts out his opening song ‘I’m In a Cage’ from, well, inside a cage.

From that moment on it’s a show delivered with laughs aplenty and some close to the bone humour that lesser people could find offensive.

One particular song that stands out is ‘Cont’ – however, give Tim time to go through the whole song for what is a smart and extremely funny result.

Throughout his performance are some very good exchanges with conductor Jules Buckley and his 55-piece Heritage Orchestra.

It’s hard not to laugh as he sings about everything from cancer – You Grew On Me – and religion – Thank You God – in which he takes a pop at people who try to force their beliefs on him with a sharp sarcasm that few comedians possess.

Even more endearing is his almost nervous delivery of jokes and anecdotes away from his piano, but he still pulls everything off with aplomb.

His ability to poke fun at the ‘fact’ his four-year-old daughter is ‘adopted’ shows no stone is left unturned in his quest to make people laugh. And it gets even more surreal as we watch him compare Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book and The Holy Qur’an. Yes, you read that correctly.

Interacting every-so-often with the audience, he knows how to keep them in the palm of his hand, and on this showing the man whose song about his wife is a laugh-out-loud backhanded compliment proves he’s a comedic force to be reckoned with.

Tim Minchin and The Heritage Orchestra Live at the Royal Albert Hall is out on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday, November 14.
