New Tomb Raider film to be ‘a character piece’

Producer Graham King has revealed a few more details about the upcoming Tomb Raider film.

A reboot of the franchise, written by Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, they had previously mentioned that the film will be, “an origin story for Lara Croft.” From the sound of it, this will be something along the lines of J.J. AbramsStar Trek, or Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.

The box office, they weren’t disasters,” says King as he chatted to Coming Soon about the previous films. “I find it interesting that the story that we’re telling is really the story before she became Lara Croft, so it is a character piece. It does have a lot of really great characters, but it’s a lot of action and a lot of fun, and for me, it’s something very different. I’ve not really done a movie like that before, but I really gravitated to rebooting this franchise and we’re going to give it a shot.

Mentioning “the story before she became Lara Croft,” is slightly telling. Although updated in later games, the character’s history from the original game manual explains how a plane taking her home from a holiday unfortunately crashed in the Himalayas, leaving Lara as the sole survivor. It’s possible that this bit of history might be reworked into the new film.

At the moment, there’s no indication as to who will direct and which actress will play the lead. Who do you think would make for the ideal Lara Croft?
