A Very SMENT Christmas

Its that time of year where music charts are filled with festive joy and tunes that get you jumping around happily realising Christmas is now upon us. Korea and their entertainment companies are not ones to miss out on all this happiness, and compete head to head releasing Christmas singles and Christmas family albums. This is a perfect time for all the imagery we have grown accustomed to over the year to disappear, as a new fluffy, cute and ultra silly style takes over, showing how versatile each artist can really be in both looks and vocals. Ranging from pop to rock, you are guaranteed to find at least one Kpop Christmas song you will love!

Leading the way with an album full of Christmas spirit are SMEntertaiment with their 2011 Winter SMTown, The Warmest Gift. Although classed as Kpop due to being made by SMEnt, this could technically be classed as an English album. Every song is in the English language, and although we could call it “Engrish” it’s understandable and is definitely a competitor for international charts.

With a Christmas album filled with 11 amazing tracks there will be at least one song to rid you of the Scrooge inside. Starting with Super Junior and the released single “Santa U Are The One” this contains some laughable moments. There is so much “Engrish” in this song, that it actually makes you giggle. Telling a story about Santa this song has its child-like qualities which makes a decent Christmas song.

Although it has been a whole year of ups and downs for DBSK, they have thrown that all away with a cover of “Sleigh Ride“, followed with “Distance” by Boa, you can’t have Christmas without a song about heartbreak. SHINee have decided to present us with an amazing cover of WHAM‘s huge Christmas classic, “Last Christmas“, remaking the depressing song into something quite joyful. Girls Generation have gone for a more happy go lucky tune, with the obligatory jingling bells in the background. The lyrics are cute and very catchy, who knew “Diamonds” could be so christmassy.

For me Christmas is all about being joyful, and I sometimes get angry when these depressing ballad songs come out, but with a change of lyrics added to a ballad track, you can have one amazingly beautiful fairytale styled Christmas song. Kangta’s vocals along with the music make “For The First Time” one of my favorites off the album. In the SMEnt family, Trax are known for bringing their rock and roll style, and it doesn’t change just because it’s Christmas. “Like A Dream” is the kind of christmassy song you want when driving, manly vocals from Jay and Jungmo with the soft yet rocky beat in the background. Although I’m not a great fan of Jang Ri In, my perception of her vocal skills have changed completely. Bringing a slight Asian feel to the classic “The First Noel“, accompanied by perfect English pronunciations, I am completely blown away by this version.

1,2,3” I wouldn’t class as a Christmas song, more a song I would see being released during the year, but then F(x) liven up the album with this cutesy pop beat. CSJH The Grace Dana & Sunday only made a comeback this year, and like their song title “Amazing“, I too find them absolutely amazing. Again a ballad song revolving around love and thankfulness, but not too cheesy. “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” is a total classic, and although I haven’t heard much about J-Min, I can say that as a cover, this is one of the best versions I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. If there was only one album you could get for the Christmas period, I would 100% recommend this album, for it covers all the emotions you need to feel and is presented amazingly.
