Bye Bye Bandai! Bandai Entertainment to stop publishing new Manga and Anime!

With 2012 only a couple of days old, it would appear that the new year is off to a bad start for Anime and Manga fans with the announcement that Bandai Entertainment will no longer publish, from February, any new DVD’s, Blu-rays and manga.

What the company, which is a subsidiary of Namco Bandai Holdings, plans to do is re-focus their efforts instead to selling licensing rights to other interested third parties, focusing on areas such as digital distribution, broadcasting and merchandising. It could also be argued that they are becoming essentially a BBC Worldwide for manga and anime, which in a way could be an interesting move. Whilst this is sad news for the fans, it is even sadder news for those working for or with the company, with three of their five fulltime staff, together with most of their contractors being fired.

Some good news has emerged from this however, as the company have confirmed that all existing parts of their catalogue will still be available after the February cut off point and some of their back catalogue will also be re-produced should there be a demand for it.

So what does this mean for those fans who were awaiting titles that were originally scheduled after the deadline? Well a list of cancellations has been published (see below) and in this writers opinion there could still be hope for even those if the company can sell their rights to other parties. Alas until then it would appear that this news could lead to a rash of anime and manga fans suddenly needing the free hugs they have previously declined.
