So for the third year running the Call of Duty brand has claimed the number selling title of the year and it is no surprise when you consider that the game took £83million in its first week on sale and is widely thought to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time. But whether the brand will make it four years in a row remains to be seen, especially when 2012 sees the release of the next Grand Theft Auto game.

But that is just for the UK, what about our cousins in the US? Well below is the list of the top ten cross format games of 2011 for the USA courtesy of the US market retail tracking firm NPD.

Annual 2011 Top 10 Games (New Physical Retail only; across all platforms incl. PC)

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (360, PS3, Wii, PC)**
  2. Just Dance 3 (Wii, 360, PS3)
  3. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (360, PS3, PC)**
  4. Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC)**
  5. Madden NFL 12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2)**
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, Wii, NDS, PC)**
  7. Batman: Arkham City (360, PS3, PC)**
  8. Gears of War 3 (360)**
  9. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
  10. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (360, PS3, PC)

**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

No surprises that once again Call Of Duty:MW3 has taken the top spot but what is surprising, at least from this reporter’s point of view, is that the US chart has no mention of LA Noire and Saints Row: The Third. This is especially interesting when you consider that in the UK version of the chart, both games place higher than Batman: Arkham City, which has made it into the US chart at number seven.

In contrast to this, if we take a look at Japan’s top sellers of 2011, you will see a completely different list of games altogether.

Annual 2011 Top 10 Games  Japan

  1. Mario Kart 7 (3DS)
  2. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
  3. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP,PS3)
  4. Monster Hunter 3G (3DS)
  5. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3)
  6. Final Fantasy Type-0 (PSP)
  7. Minna no Rhythm Tengoku (Wii)
  8. Tales of Xillia (PS3)
  9. Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
  10. Wii Party (Wii)

So as you can see it appears that the Japanese preferred to be playing on the go in 2011, with five of the games in the chart being for portable consoles. Interesting too is the fact that the Japanese top ten does not feature any titles for Microsoft’s XBOX 360 console, with the chart instead favouring Nintendo with six entries and Sony, who manage to take the remaining four places. In terms of franchises, Mario seems once again to be king, taking the top two spots and selling over 2 million units in the process, followed in second by the Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy franchises respectively.

What all three charts however do show is that each country has its particular tastes when it comes to gaming, with the Japanese preferring more established franchises, the USA preferring first person shooters and the UK preferring a wide mix of gaming styles.

One thing however is certain, with the already mentioned Grand Theft Auto 5 being the analyst favourite to take the spot as 2012’s biggest seller, all that remains is for the remaining mix of sequels (Fifa 13, WWE’13, The Next Call Of Duty Game to name but a few) and hopefully the odd original title to battle it out for the rest of the spots.

What was your favourite game of 2011? What do you think should be the biggest seller of 2012? As usual leave your thoughts in the comments below.
