I Am Legend sequel gains momentum

Another I Am Legend film had been talked about right after the original film was released, with rumours that it might be a prequel focusing on how Will Smith’s character, Robert Neville, became the last man on Earth. The prequel idea now appears to have been scrapped.

Warner Bros. have finalised a deal with Akiva Goldsman, co-writer and producer of the original film, and Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment, in pushing forward with a second film. There is no word on if the original film’s director Francis Lawrence will return, while Smith himself will not sign on until he is has read the finished script.

Warner has hired Arash Amel to write a sequel. I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of him. He has scripted the action thriller The Expatriate and the biopic of Grace Kelly, Grace Of Monaco, both of which haven’t been released yet. Apparently it is his work on the latter that brought him to Warner’s attention.

For anyone who has seen the film (or read Richard Matheson’s novel), there remains a big issue in how to bring back Smith’s character. Many would argue that the film doesn’t need a follow up, but Warner Bros. still retain the rights to Matheson’s novel and clearly wish to expand on it. Especially after the 2007 blockbuster managed to earn over $580 million in worldwide ticket sales.
