Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition for summer release

“Take heart fellow adventurers, for you have curried the favour of Boo, the only miniature giant space hamster in the Realm!”

Now you are either very confused by this statement or you’re feeling reminiscent of one of the greatest classic games of the RPG genre. The quote itself comes from the original Baldur’s Gate game, something which set the tone, level and pace for most RPG games today. Especially in the dungeons and dragons style familiar to most dungeon crawlers.

Even Mass Effect 2 pays homage with the inclusion of your pet in the Captain’s quarters; the space hamster which is purchasable on the presidium!

I appreciate right now there must be some confusion as to why anyone would bring up this rather retro game, but it’s Beamdog and Atari, designer and publisher respectively, who feel the world is missing a little tradition.

It is good to see that the development team are taking this truly to heart and we don’t have to fear some awful reincarnation. Quoting directly: “This is the Enhanced Edition, it’s not a repackage. We have the original source code and are doing a significant update.”

There has been a teaser poster released and already I’m feeling nostalgic and excited about getting back into some old boots. One could even say the proverbial sword is being sharpened. And I’ve been practicing on destroying those over sized rats that can be found in every pub/tavern/sewer/old home/forest/cave and general purpose starting area in any RPG game.

As much as it’s great to head back to the roots of any game, and 343 Industries are an example of how this can be done beautifully, we have to ask, “Are there no real new ideas out there?” Obviously there are lots of new leading title games, but with Devil May Cry HD collection, Metal Gear Solid HD, Ico and Shadow of The Colossus HD Collection and the remakes of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, are we finding too much comfort in paying for games that have already been made; games that are probably already in our collection but with some shiner graphics?

Baldurs Gate has been set for a summer release, with no confirmation if it will be a PC exclusive.
