RoboCop reboot starts viral campaign

Filming has not yet started, but the viral marketing campaign on the RoboCop reboot has already begun, with the launch of a website for OmniCorp, the fictional corporation noted for their military products.

Visit the OminiCorp site and a ‘product line’ video starts to play (attached below), which asks you to imagine your city with no crime. The site and the video also showcase the XT-908 and the newly redesigned ED-209. They also mention that they’ll be unveiling the RC-2000 in the coming months. Doesn’t take a lot of effort to work out what RC is supposed to stand for here. Unfortunately you can’t order an ED-209 for your city (despite the proclamation that it’s available now), but a quick scroll down will reveal that Sony Pictures are behind the site.

The original film, directed by Paul Verhoeven, was released back in 1987 and became a hit with its mix of ultra violence and satire. It spawned two sequels and a TV series.

The reboot sees Joel Kinnaman in the title role, a cop named Alex Murphy who is turned into the cyborg officer. Gary Oldman will co-star as Norton, the scientist who creates RoboCop. Samuel L. Jackson will play media mogul Pat Novak while Abbie Cornish will star as Alex’s wife Ellen. Hugh Laurie rounds off the cast as the CEO of OmniCorp.

RoboCop will be directed by José Padilha (responsible for the excellent Elite Squad films) and is currently set for release in the UK and US on August 9th 2013.
