Joss Whedon talks Guardians and Avengers 2

Joss Whedon has taken his film Much Ado About Nothing to the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, a recreation of Shakespeare’s play, was shot in 12 days at Joss Whedon’s house.

You see Joss doesn’t have holidays, he just makes more movies. After spending so much time on a project like The Avengers where it’s a huge collaboration, the director wanted to spend some time doing something a little smaller in scale with people he enjoys working with.

Much Ado About Nothing is being released by Bellwether Pictures, a micro studio put together by Joss Whedon and his wife Kai Cole. It’s likely that there could be more projects like this as Joss heads in to Marvel’s Phase 2, with small-scale creations being the only things he will have time for between being Mr Marvel.

As new directors join Joss in the Marvel Universe he made it very clear that he doesn’t want to be just another studio executive. “Very talented people are writing and directing these movies,” he said. What I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say ‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this.’ I’m not that.”

Joss Whedon admitted to MTV News that he was unsure of Guardians of the Galaxy until the moment he heard that James Gunn would be directing. “He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart,” said Joss.

A film that includes a talking tree (outside of The Lord of the Rings) and a gun wielding raccoon was always going to be risky. A huge number of people could be turned off by the very idea but Joss is sure that the fans will love Gunn’s ideas, saying, “He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!”

Talk inevitably turned to The Avengers 2 with Joss explaining how far he wanted to take the superhero team, saying “The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”
