Characters for S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show revealed

Things are certainly steaming ahead for the Marvel/ABC project S.H.I.E.L.D., a television programme spinning off from the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the exploits for the titular organisation. What S.H.I.E.L.D. make up for in the lack of super-powered humans in their ranks they make up for in spirit, and with recent news coming from TVLine we now know whom to look forward to seeing.

S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for “Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division” and is a covert organisation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe led by Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson). The television show of the same name will follow the exploits of the organisation as they operate parallel to their superhero counterparts such as Iron Man and Captain America.

Of course what made this deal sound even sweeter is that this project will have Joss Whedon’s involvement, who is currently set to co-write and also direct the pilot should he be able to schedule it. Joining Whedon will be his brother and sister-in-law Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, two constant collaborators with Joss, having worked on multiple projects such as Dollhouse and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

Since the announcement of this project, more and more pieces of information have been coming through, and TVLine recently broke the news of the cast list for the pilot. The release announced five characters, the five of them being:

SKYE – A woman in her late-20s who is described as “fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.”

AGENT GRANT WARD – Ward is described as “Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.”

AGENT ALTHEA RICE – Rice is also known as “The Calvary,” and is described as a “hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot.” It is also said that through her experiences she’s become very quiet and a little damaged.

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS – Fitz and Simmons are described together as quite the inseparable pair. It is explained that this bond came through training together and that they still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their brother/sister-like relationship is described to be “reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.”

These characters sound very promising and very suited to the sorts of characters S.H.I.E.L.D’s writers are good at writing. There is a very familiar Whedonesque feel to the characters, and as such, at least personally, it’s quite easy to think of potential actors for the roles, looking back at some Whedon alum.

Summer Glau as Skye maybe? Tahmoh Penikett for Agent Grant Ward? Eliza Dushku as Agent Althea Rice? Amy Acker as Agent Jemma Simmons? Fran Kranz as Agent Leo Fitz?

What do you think readers? Do any actors come to your mind when you read that character list? Do you have a dream cast for this show yet in your mind? Do you think Whedon and company can really pull this off?

That last one isn’t a proper question by the way. Of course they will.
