Armie Hammer to Play Batman?

Back in 2007, Armie Hammer and a number of other young actors were preparing themselves to work on a Justice League movie with George Miller directing. Hammer was all set to play Batman and even had a go at wearing the outfit. Unfortunately, the writer’s strike and other problems caused the film to be cancelled.

Armie Hammer told MTV back in 2010 “It’s unfortunate, because the amount of work that was already done — I mean, they had finished pre-production and they were a couple of days away from starting to shoot, so it’s a shame that nobody got to see all of the work that got put into it.”

At least he got to try on the bat cape. “I loved it,” Hammer said. “But I didn’t even get a picture of it!”

Afterwards, Hammer started to build up a pretty solid career, working on The Social Network, Mirror Mirror and next year’s The Lone Ranger. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by Warner Bros. Everything has come full circle, as once again Hammer is supposedly on their radar to play our favourite caped crusader. That’s not to say he’s a definite though, as Taylor Kitsch (John Carter) is also a potential candidate. Of course the poor performance of John Carter at the box office could harm his chances.

Along with this bit of casting information came the news that the Justice League version of Batman’s character would be kept to the confines of the film, which means no solo projects. Zach Snyder, director of Man of Steel, has said in the past that his Superman would also have nothing to do with any Justice League project.

So it seems that we can’t expect any Marvel-like crossovers. I’m sure fans will appreciate a restart on the character of Green Lantern but how will they react to having another Superman flying around when the Henry Cavill version would only have been seen a year or two before? Or even worse, what if a Man of Steel sequel ended up being released in the same year?

A draft of the Justice League screenplay has been written by Will Beale and a director is still to be confirmed.
