Clark Gregg to return in Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. as Agent Coulson

A very interesting and exciting piece of casting news came out of the New York Comic-Con on Saturday, revealing that Clark Gregg would reprise his role as fan favourite Agent Coulson in the upcoming Marvel/ABC TV pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D.

TVLine relays the information announced by Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feig, who said, “Did you ever think there would be a S.H.I.E.L.D. show without Agent Phil Coulson?”

The news makes for very interesting information, as it raises questions and theories as to where S.H.I.E.L.D. fits in alongside Marvel’s Cinematic Universe as well as to how Coulson will appear given his journey in the Marvel movies.

Gregg has most recently been reprising his role in animated form, playing Agent Coulson in TV’s Ultimate Spider-Man, but it is always welcome for Gregg to appear on-screen, having appeared in both Iron Man movies, Thor and The Avengers, not to mention the Marvel One-Shot shorts The Consultant and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer.

As audiences could always do with another helping of the brilliant S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, it will be most interesting to see how Agent Coulson will fit into the world created in the TV pilot for the show.

The pilot of Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. (as it is now known by) will be written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. The three will also executive produce along with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.

Clark Gregg played the role of Agent Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and you can watch one of his adventures below in Marvel’s One-Shot short, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer.
