Kristina Anapau Talks True Blood

Over the last few years a torrent of vampire related movies and shows have been thrown our way, some good and some, not so good. Amidst all those shows, one has stood tall above the rest, like a shining beacon, lighting up the darkest night, and that show is True Blood. Dark, dangerous and downright sexy, True Blood is without a doubt one of the best things on TV right now. Not so long ago I was lucky enough to catch up with the wonderfully talented Kristina Anapau who plays Bon Temps resident 500 year old fairy Maurella, and fire a few questions at her.

NICK: How did you come to be a part of the True Blood team?

KRISTINA: I auditioned for Alan Ball and the producers. I got the call that they wanted to offer me the role just few hours after I had left the room!

NICK: When you auditioned for the part, were they secretive about the character and where they might take her?

KRISTINA: Absolutely. It can be a very Darwinian environment on the show as far as how some of the storylines evolve, which is amazing because it gives an actor a lot of creative freedom when shaping the character – so at the time of the audition, I’m not sure if even they knew where Maurella was headed as a character. It’s one of the aspects of the show that I believe helps make it such a huge success – quite a brilliant way to go about it.

NICK: Were you a fan of the show prior to getting the part? If so who was your favourite character?

KRISTINA: I was indeed a fan of the show prior to joining the cast. It is without a doubt one of the best shows on television and has been for the past five years. I love so many of the characters – I really adore Pam. Kristen Bauer does such a great job.

NICK: What can you tell us about Maurella?

KRISTINA: She can read minds, shoot balls of light out of her hands, and has a gestation period of a week. What’s not to love?

NICK: How do you go about getting into character for what is essentially a 500 year old fairy?

KRISTINA: I suppose I gave her a little extra regality – an air of having 500 years worth of knowledge about life and human nature that results in a certain kind of calmness.

NICK: What has been the toughest part about playing this character for you?

KRISTINA: It’s been wonderful all around. Maurella is a pleasure to bring to life.

NICK: What was your reaction when you found out that your first scene would be to seduce Andy Bellefleur?

KRISTINA: Chris Bauer is one of my favourite actors on the show – I was thrilled to work with him. He is inspiring on every level.

NICK: What has been your favourite episode as Maurella so far?

KRISTINA: The Season Finale!

NICK: What have you enjoyed most about playing Maurella?

KRISTINA: Well I suppose I have always had a fondness for fairies and the woodland supernatural. What little girl doesn’t dress up like a fairy or wish she was a fairy at some point in her childhood? That’s one of the beautiful things about being an actor – you periodically get the opportunity to live out the fantasies of your childhood after you had long ago given up on them ever becoming a reality.

NICK: If you were given the opportunity to decide Maurella’s future, where would you take her as a character?

KRISTINA: Oh, I don’t know – there are endless possible directions. As one of the oldest fae, I think Maurella seems to still have a lot of information to impart to Sookie in regards to Warlow and what happened to her parents – I’d love to see that storyline developed and clarified further – it’s one that everyone can relate to on some level. I’d also love to see Maurella fall in love with a vampire and he (or she) with her. I really loved the “impossible love” element of Bill and Eric’s love for Sookie forcing them to control their natural urges to drink her faerie blood. More of that dynamic would be wonderful on the show – so fundamentally and deliciously romantic.
