Oz: The Great and Powerful Theatrical Trailer

1939’s The Wizard of Oz is an iconic entry in the world of cinema. Bringing the stories of L. Frank Baum to life, The Wizard of Oz staring Judy Garland is a film that continues to stand up to this day. Since then (and even before then) there have been many other Oz-related movies, some verging on the borderline nightmare fuel like 1985’s Return To Oz, and some even ushering in completely new musical takes such as 1978’s The Wiz. Next year, however, we shall be shown an entirely new direction in a visual realisation of Oz seen like never before.

Visionary director Sam Raimi of Spider-Man and Evil Dead fame brings us Oz: The Great and Powerful. The film is to be a prequel to the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz and a prequel to that of the original book, told from the perspective of the titular wizard of Oz.

James Franco plays Oscar Diggs, a circus magician inexplicably thrown from our world into the Land of Oz. A man of questionable ethics, he is soon shown the fame and riches he could only have imagined… only to discover that he has a few obstacles in his way, namely having to prove his worth as he deals with the witches Theodora (Mila Kunis), Glinda (Michelle Williams) and Evanora (Rachel Weisz).

As can be seen, Raimi has helped create a very vivid and magical version of Oz, one that is colourful and feels both fresh and familiar to those who are aware of the iconography of Oz. The film also benefits from the developments in technology compared to the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, implementing the use of 3D to good effect.

Much like its predecessor, Oz: The Great and Powerful is set to begin in black and white in a smaller aspect ratio to the rest of the movie. In a similar artistic move to the 1939 classic, once Oscar finds himself in Oz the world suddenly becomes rich in colour, but also the 3D effect in Oz: The Great and Powerful suddenly becomes much deeper and powerful. It’s a very clever way to play on the format and call back to our memories of the original.

It definitely looks like 2013 will be another great year for movies, with Oz: The Great and Powerful looking like it’s going to be the movie to watch thanks to its clever use of 3D and the stunning colourful world created for it. It just goes to show that with another interesting Oz film coming soon we’ll never really say goodbye to the yellow brick road.

Oz: The Great and Powerful is set for an 8th March 2013 release. It stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, and is directed by Sam Raimi. Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire wrote the screenplay, with the original premise inspired by the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.
