Will and Jaden Smith in After Earth: First Trailer

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

It seems Will Smith has once again had the opportunity to work with his son Jaden Smith, on the action/ sci-fi After Earth. On the strength of the trailer it looks like this could be worth a watch. From the looks of things Jaden Smith has the bulkier role, something he proved he is more than capable of handling back on The Karate Kid. Then having the two characters in such an isolated and dangerous situation could lead to some heart wrenching moments.

The effects look decent and the premise of After Earth is pretty cool. There’s just one problem. The film’s directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

After the horrible ordeal that was The Last Airbender it’s sort of a case of ,”Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.” And that’s not to mention the other films on his directorial list that have been ridiculed by critics. The weight of the acting alone might by worth the ticket price, just don’t expect many Avatar fans to be sat in the auditorium with you.

After Earth opens in the UK and US on June 7th 2013.
